Make sure you've played each game at least once and ideally, you've played each one outside at least once too.

Beyond that, here are some general guidelines (emphasis on the "guidelines." These are not hard rules.) for when to move on.

When to Move On From Position

Value for Profit Position

  • Your pup is immediately coming back to profit position almost (if not every) time without a lure
  • Your pup is at least somewhat close to your hip and relatively straight. In the future, you can work on this until your pup is an inch from your body and her front legs are perfectly lined up with your legs

Value for Profit Position Outside

  • While outside, your pup is immediately coming back to profit position almost (if not every) time in a low-to-medium distraction outside location without a lure
  • While outside, your pup is at least somewhat close to your hip and relatively straight. In the future, you can work on this until your pup is an inch from your body and her front legs are perfectly lined up with your legs

Profit Position Spins

  • Your pup makes at least four quick 1/4 turns with you in a row without a lure

Profit Position Black Hole

  • Your pup is immediately coming back to profit position almost (if not every) time from in front of you, from behind you, and from both sides without a lure
  • Your pup is at least somewhat close to your hip. In the future, you can work on your pup coming closer and turning her body to always face in the same direction as you.

Training Advice Going Forward

  • Practice "Value for Profit Position" to improve your pup's location in profit position until it's as close and as straight as you want it
  • Practice "Profit Position Black Hole" until your pup will come into profit position on her own from any angle and rotate her body until she's facing the same direction (this is hard and takes lots of practice so don't expect quick results)
  • Practice these games in distracting environments until your pup is just as successful in a normal distraction environment as a no-distraction environment
