Food aggression is a type of guarding resources that can happen either between dogs or between a dog and a human. Here we're going to focus on the type with humans.

When food aggression occurs, the dog becomes overly defensive of their food and/or treats in the presence of humans.

  • Start with hand-feeding. Instead of dumping food in the bowl and looking at your phone, have your puppy eat food from your hand bit by bit.
  • After a week or two, transition into half food in the bowl, half from your hand
  • During meal time, gently touch his paws, ears, and bowl. Reward him with high value treats
  • If that's positive, have friends and family come join in to help during meal times.

If your puppy shows aggressive body language like growling or exposed teeth, seek help from an in-person certified behaviorist.
