If You Think You’re Giving Too Many Treats, You Might Be Treating Enough1 minute read
This is one of the biggest mistakes first time trainers make.
When you’re trying to build and grow a behavior, you need to reinforce that behavior. A lot. A lot. A LOT.
Think about how reinforcement works in your own life. Have you ever received an unexpected bonus? How motivated were you at work in the weeks after that happened?
That same psychological response is true for your dog too. Sure, your dog may start to lose interest in one type of treat if you give it too much—that’s why we recommend a strategy of low, medium, and high reward treats—but that is a problem which is easily solved. Building motivation in your dog is a much harder one.
So if you think you’re giving your dog too many treats, you just might be giving him enough. But probably not. Give him more you Scrooge!
