Do you want your puppy to come to you when you say its name? Then it's important to use it sparingly. Ideally, you're only using their name when you want them to come (and if they do come, you better have a treat for them).

Other times, a nickname is useful for getting their attention. We need to condition your puppy's name the same way you would any other cue like "Sit" and "Down." With any name, keeping a high batting average is important. Too many unsuccessful attempts getting the dog's attention with it can hinder your ability to develop a great response when you need it most.

Sometimes you'll instinctively say their name when they're doing something they're not supposed to (e.g. Fido no!). Resist the urge. It will pay off with great name recognition and recall.
